Beehive Catch-Up

As most of us are recovering from a 3-day weekend, there are a lot of hot topics in the iVillage community to catch up on. From a flagging libido to tainted toothpaste, here are just a few hot topics from our message boards, groups and blogs:

-- The thrill is gone? Women are discussing what happens to romance after several years of marriage on the Hot Topic: Married without Romance message board. One iVillager laments: "After 10 years together (the last several married), I can honestly say that my husband is attractive, has never looked better, yet I am not sexually attracted to him." Is this just the way it goes or is there something else going on? Should you settle for a marriage without romance or passion?

-- More tainted products traced to China ... first it was pet food and now the focus is on toothpaste. How safe are the things we buy? On the In the News message board, it seems like there may be a conspiracy brewing.

-- Want to get involved and make a difference -- either in your community or globally -- but aren't sure where to start? Dollar Philanthropy and iVillage Cares are two great resources to get you motivated. Commit to a cause and then check out some of the great charities that are changing lives in real and lasting ways.

-- And you thought your mom always seemed old ... what about parents having kids later in life? It maybe a natural progression of our increasingly more youthful society, but what about moms having babies at age 60? They've been discussing this on the 20-Something Hangout message board. One iVillager's take: "...when it comes to someone 60+ actually choosing to have their own child, it is entirely their own choice and in my opinion, a very selfish choice."

-- Cindy Sheehan, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq and vocal anti-war protester, has decided to step out of the public eye as the face of the American anti-war movement. Comments from all sides are quickly coming in on the Politics Today message board.

if the safety of our globally exchanged products is in question, we're all in serious danger. What are they doing to make sure we're safe? What should we do to make sure we're buying safe products?

Also on the age / motherhood thing... I'm 40, and exhausted after dealing with my kids now... I shudder to think what I'd be like in 20 years with babies... no thank you, lol!

Not enough space here I bet for all my thoughts.

If there's no passion, seek a doctor's help before assuming it's permanent. It may be medical, not marital or mental.

If we continue to find issues with products from a particular country, I think we should stop buying anything from that country until they make their safety testing more accurate and rigorous. It's not all about saving money, our health is more important.

Sheehan should have quit ages ago. What a sad eulogy to her son who volunteered for the military. Her methods obviously don't work anyway. (And Bush isn't listening to the voting people anyway, what makes her think she'll make a difference.)

A baby over 60 is selfish indeed. Just because we want something doesn't mean we do it at all costs. A child deserves a parent who can attend to it all the way through high school, when at all possible. Obviously health issues arise for people of all ages, but at least the age of when you have a baby is something you can semi-control.

Tainted toothpaste? This is getting just plain scary. Why don't we INSIST that China increases its safety? And while we're at it, how about their lousy environmental laws?? Cheap toothpaste is nice and all, but only if it's safe.

60 is TOO old to have a baby. Even this 60 year old lady's grown children think she's selfish.

Kay said:

Yikes, who would want a baby at 60. Just the thought alone I'd question whether or not she was sane enough to raise kids. I thing there probably is a pretty darn good reason why God made it so old ladies can't have kids. If it's a natural thing then let it be but if it's some sort of medical intervention then it aint right.

I hadn't seen that about the toothpaste. I think we better be watching China a bit closer. This could be a bad thing because just about all Americans have teeth and pets.

AJ said:

If anyone thinks that the only things tainted are pet food and toothpaste, wake up! A big food crisis is coming.

Kate said:

I was watching the news last night and heard that a pet treat has now been pulled as tainted. Do a little research on the issue of food safety. You'll be scared to eat anything you didn't grow yourself!

Julie said:

American grown and produced. That's what we need to focus on. Something big is on the horizon. Wake up and stop smelling that imported coffee.

Step said:

I'm starting to wish I lived on my own, self-sufficient little farm, growing and raising my own food, living completely independent of outside food sources, lol.
