Where Do You Stand on the Ban?
On Wednesday the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling that bans a procedure popularly called "partial birth abortion". The 5-4 decision marked the first time that the court has ruled on a specific procedure rather than the question of abortion overall. While most abortions performed would not be affected by this ban, the ruling has obviously added fuel to an already volatile long-running debate between pro-life and pro-choice activists. While abortion opponents see it as a major victory for their beliefs, abortion rights groups feel it's a major setback. Likely echoing their concerns, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg held a dissenting opinion and stated that this ruling "cannot be understood as anything other than an effort to chip away at a right declared again and again by this court." She went on to say that the decision flies in the face of previous decisions and procedures deemed necessary by medical organizations. I'm paraphrasing a bit there, but Ruth's not the only one with a dissenting opinion around here; this news has sparked a lot of conversation on our boards as well. From the Abortion Debate board:
"I do not wish for abortion to become illegal but I can't say I was upset to hear this procedure will no longer be performed."
"I don't know about you, but if I need medical help, it's the doctor I'm turning to, not a politician trying to look "moral."This ban is posturing and potentially dangerous."
Of course they're also discussing this ruling -- and the politics associated with it -- on the Politics Today board:
"No surprise. I fully expected *this* court to put it's layman opinion ahead of the medical experience and knowledge of licensed OB's and gynocologists on the issue before it.It's called arrogance."
"I believe there has been so much objection due to the fact that it is a slippery slope. Once you start limiting abortion or banning certain procedures, it is only a matter of time until they ban the entire procedure."
What do you think about this ruling? Do you feel that this is a major development in the abortion debate? Does the decision set the stage for what issues are going to be in the spotlight for the 2008 presidential race? Share your thoughts and reactions here.

I'm pro choice I guess. However... it's a WOMAN'S BODY.... Why are we allowing MEN and the Government to make the rules about what we can and cannot do to them?
I worry that this will become one of the big hot topic issues and push other issues aside as we get closer to the Elections. I hope they will address many different issues, not just a few polarizing ones.
I'm generally pro-life, but what worries me about this is what about adverse fetal diagnosis incompatible with life? Most women experiencing "normal" pregnancies don't have an ultrasound until 18-20 weeks along. And, it would be the first incling as to whether something is terribly, terribly wrong (look up anencephaly for one). Often times, these babies give all appearances of "life" (heartbeat, kicks, etc), but is essentially without a fully functioning, normally developed brain. They will never be "alive". Wwhat is their alternative if they want to terminate and keep their baby's body whole for their one and only cuddle or for burial? Some would suggest carrying to term, but I think that would be exceedingly cruel to the mother... I disagree w/ abortion carte blanche, but I also disagree w/ the government's clear interferance with a purely medial decision that should be between a woman, her doctor, and her family.
I am an advocate for women's rights and a practicing Catholic. I believe Roe vs. Wade was historical and the decision should stand. Women should practice their own moral beliefs and the government should support those decisions.
People make the decision to have sex everyday knowing full well they could get pregnant. If they later decide that it was a mistake they still have plenty of time to make that choice. There aren't very many circumstances that a women doesn't find out until that late in the pregnancy that there is a problem. I would like all of you to read exactly what is done in that procedure and then decide who it is cruel to. Would any of you be able to do that to your child if it was born with a disabilty? No, besides at that point it would be considered a cruel and unusual murder. You guys seem worried about our government stepping in where it shouldn't but when it doesn't step in on other affairs they are failing. Make up your mind. They didn't order you to have sex you made that decision on your own.
OK, here we go... "m", I, too, thought just as you did - if people wouldn't get themselves into these situations, blah, blah, blah... That is, until this exact terrible situation happened in my family - to someone very, very close to me. Someone, who with her husband of several years, very much WANTED their baby... I only pray that never happens to anyone close to you.
I am well aware of what happens in that procedure, but you seem to not be aware that fetuses with severe neurological deformities have no consciousness or "normal" sensory function. They can't feel anything.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with what happens after a baby is born. For your info, however, many, many parents DO opt for palliative care for newborns with grave developmental disorders when, theoretically, they can be "saved". Should they also be charged with murder? My point is that I believeit is a PERSONAL decision, and has no place in congress or the courts.
Life is not what we all ask 4 it happens=All of us the world! I am women!I have rights!Living in the land of the free!We are the goverment!Stand Up be heard not controled! The people in office today shall pass too! Keep it real! Iam me you are you ! Iam not in this life to live up to your expectations But you are hear too live up to mine! LOL! I am free! This goverment & right wing control have ruined this county!(When you see other places in the world w/more rights!) And they don,t seem to feel the future harm they have caused!!.The women have a chance & they seem to be running back into the holes.Fighting a war that is suppose to free them. This is confidential info. Between a women & (HER!!!)Doc. Not the country & world.Just as my death rights!People are not taking care of the one that need it now & the control, abuse, poverty,in abiliaty to care for the animals that live on this planet also. There are a lot more things the goverment could work on besides individual picking they have,No Rights Over!Clean-air&water
Isn't this wat we all knew when Bush appointed a conservitive to the Court -- a chipping away of women's abortion rights. But, of course, Bush thinks it's OK for 'good old boys' politians to have affairs & maybe get them pregnant, appoint liars to high positions, & spend for his foreign mistakes, especially when our school systems can not get enought money.
...if you had ever watched as an infants warm, moving head is injected to kill him in order to deliver a dead infant as I have watched, you would never even consider the thought. It doesn't end it for you anyway, the day will never go away. Why not remember it as the day you provided an aching loving, childless couple the happiness they could not acheive on their own? and a child a happy loving family? You could, that is the choice.
I think that this ruling is just the start of chipping away at women's abortion rights. I am very concerned.
I believe it is a woman's choice to have an abortion. Why have another baby up for adoption with the millions of others, or have the baby completely abused and neglected in an unloved home?
I think it is absolutely wonderful. I believe in morals and that everyone should be given the right to live. I don't feel at all that this impedes on womens rights because they still have a choice. If my mother had not made the choice to give me up for adoption, I may not be here. If you have not viewed the pics of partial birth abortions online lately, you need to. They are horrific. As a mother myself, it is so hard to believe that another mother could do this to her child. If a woman wants an abortion she should get one within the first trimester, don't wait until the child is born and then stick and large needle through it's brain to kill it. It's wierd because when did murder become a choice? Everyone and everything deserves a chance, life could be the best choice you could ever make.
I can't make up my mind how I feel about it because one side says it's never medically necessary to have a late term abortion, and the other side says there is. Has anyone seen the facts (not just heard about) or know someone when it was done saving the mother's life?
Even though I'm a Christian, I think an early abortion is better than a child being neglected and abused. It shouldn't, though, simply be used casually as birth control. This is much different than a first trimester abortion since the baby is mostly developed and can suffer pain. If it's done simply as a matter of convenience for the mother, well, she should have thought about it before getting herself into this situation. If there's truly a medical issue in which the mother's life becomes endangered, that's a whole other ballgame. Only the woman, her dr, and family(depending on the mental state of the woman if the medical condition has caused her to, for example, go into a coma) should make the decision at that point. There are certain instances of rape and incest, but most can be handled early on during the pregnancy. Maybe this ruling will help some people make safer sex decisions. Also, maybe one of the babies saved will make a great discovery to benefit mankind.
Innocent babies should not be killed so that adults are not inconvenienced. Abortion leaves terrible emotional scars on the mothers that they will deal will for a long, long time. Abortion rights advocates don't talk about this. It's the pro-life groups that seek to counsel and help those mothers who are suffering from their poor decision.
The bottom line is that children are a GIFT from God....it is wrong to reject God's gift.
I am glad that this grotesque form of infanticide has finally been banned. It's amazing that some people would rather give up on a human life so violently than give the baby a chance to survive.
I invite the commenters on this board (both sides) to read this young woman's story in the below link, and then decide in their hearts what they would do if faced with the same thing. I maintain that no matter what side of the issue you are on - the matter is a private, personal one - and the government/courts have no business to interfere.

It IS a woman's body. Yes, let's keep men and government out of what we do with it.
I understand, as a woman, that we want to make the decisions concerning our bodies. Who makes the decision for the baby, yes BABY, that is being aborted. This is called "partial birth abortion" for a reason. If it's a choice between the life of the "mother" or the "baby" that would be one thing, but for most of the comments I've read it's not. I think some need to get a grip on reality. Could you sit and watch what is being done to this baby? It's having its brains sucked out and killed. If the decision for abortion can't be made in the first few weeks or month of pregnancy then it shouldn't be made at all.
I genrally am Pro-Choice, I think in general abortion is a terrible thing. And I've had one so don't go jumping on me like I don't know where I'm coming from. It was a decision I made deciding that "it was best for everyone" including the man that lied to me whom I found out lived w/his girlfriend, my young son who already had an sbsentee father, myself & the unborn. I have no idea how this would have affected us but I felt badly. To this day I think about the child that "could've been" they would be six & a half today. The fact that I know this lets me know how trying this decision was for me. At any rate, partial birth abortion is truly sickening. How do you kill something living, breathing and moving and call it abortion?! I just read an article about a baby born at 22 weeks this past Fall that went home recently, happy and helathy! How can you abort that? I truly feel if abortion is what you choose it should be done immediately, there is no need to "save up", you sacrifice that money. ***to be continued
It is a most personal decision between a woman, her partner, and/or her personal physician.
It is not the business of the politicians to dictate and posture on such a personal issue that does not directly affect men!
I can't help but see the great irony in people decrying the encroachment of "big gummint" into their lives who ask for just that w/some sort of legislation re: this issue.
I am adopted. But I am also pro-choice, because my bio mother had one. The caveat is that any decision regarding a pregnancy carries permanent ramifications.
Also, there in NO medical procedure called "partial-birth" abortion. That is a made up term to frighten and confuse people. I encourage everyone to read the article that AC2000 mentions.
As a general FYI, a late term abortion in only considered to save the life of the mother or in cases of severe birth defects such anencephaly. A woman with a normal pregnancy cannot "change her mind" and obtain this procedure.
IMO - forcing a woman to carry unwanted pregancy,a severly ill fetus or a pregnancy that may endanger her (fully formed and functioning) life should just be called what it is - torture.
One last point, not everyone shares the same religious beliefs. You cannot force your view on others, and if your religion tells you that abortion is wrong - don't have one. But my choices are between myself and my god.
***continued from prior post
I think its the massive abuse of abortion that led us back to the courtroom. I understand why people think they need one, I too at one point thought I needed one. That contradicts the theory however that children & reproduction are a blessing! Who was I to decide? God gave me that baby for a reason & I now doubt it was to kill it. Back to the abuse, I know a woman who has had about 4-5 abortions, possibly more. What in the hell is that? That is sickening, its not birth control! One preganancy was with twins whom she felt moving!!! Do you still agree with partial birth abortion?! A guideline has to be set on abortion somewhere because its gotten out of hand.
I was scared & confused when I had my abortion but adoption or toughing it out could have been an option. I was tricked (rubbers slipped off twice) into getting pregnant only to find out he was w/someone else. Not making excuses because I do regret it but I was young, confused & frightened.
Its too is easy not to get pregnant.
I just can't understand why everybody keeps saying this is a women's rights issue. I don't believe it has anything to do with men controlling women, or with women having complete jurisdiction over what happens to their bodies. It has to do with figuring out a few things. First of all, abortion should not be used as a form of birth control. If you have sex, you could get pregnant. If you don't take the proper precautions, then deal with the consequences. If you do get pregnant and wish to have an abortion, this is just providing a less violent, less murderous way to terminate the pregnancy. There are other ways to abort the pregnancy than partial birth abortion. Why not celebrate the fact that those options are still available? And although we have mostly men in positions of power, they are not out to exploit women. We have plenty of power to influence them as their wives, mothers, daughters... and maybe this should motivate some of us to get into office and become women's advocates.
To: AC2000
I don't know how many of you read the MSN article but it makes me feel no different about partial birth abortions or abortions in general. Now you're saying because this woman couldn't have a "perfect" baby the right thing to do was to kill it?! No way. Just like me being tricked into a pregnancy as an already young, orphaned (my mother died while I was pregnant) single mother was no excuse to kill my child. Its very taxing emotionally and having a perfect baby or perfect life should not be the reasoning. Cases of rape and incest possibly are justifiable, POSSIBLY.
And yes Lindsay, its not a "women's rights" issue, its ethical. And like I said before if abortion wasn't so highly abused it may not be such a big deal.
Point blank... if the mother is in danger or the baby is unhealthy then allow the mother to make that choice. If you are using it as an 'uh-oh" birth control method then yes ban it for that reason only...you had 3 months to do something about it. I am Pro-Choice!!! But you need to draw the line somwhere and maybe that somewhere should be with the doctor not willing to perform the procedure if it isn't for the right reasons.. not the gov't!!!!
OK, the fact still remains that partial birth abortion is plain and simple murder in the 1st degree.....basically abortion is murder, there is a life growing inside of a mother's body..how hard is that to comprehend---it's just a matter of convenience to be able to rid oneself of an indiscretion...gee how nice----ok they make birth controls pills for a reason and other methods of birth control are available figure it out....plus just a tiny matter of what about God....sooner or later you are gonna have to face Him and do some explaining about your murderous actions while your aborted baby is standing next to Him waiting on those lame excuses.....I know sex is here to stay but be responsible for your hazardous actions and deal with real life....you have to make your decisions for yourself and remember the people that call themselves doctors took an oath are they really upholding that oath I don't think so....so they (doctors) have a license to kill and get paid for it as well what a deal.........before anyon
Kassidy -
The article wasn't taking about a "perfect" baby. It was talking about a baby that had its spinal cord outside its body and its brain crushed against its own skull. Severe hydracephaly and spina bifida.
Would you rather this baby be born completely unable to survive and be in pain and for the mother to be forced to carry the child for nine months knowing without a doubt that her baby would die or be still-born?
Cases of "abortion abuse" are not as common as you seem to think. Using birth control IS being responsible. The Pill is only 99% effective. 1% of 1 million is still a lot of women that were acting responsibly and now have to make a hugely difficult decision.
Your choice to continue your pregnancies was your choice. Just as it another woman's choice to not continue hers.
Again - you cannot undergo a late-term abortion without proper medical cause. This option is only for dire cases
God also said not to judge others unless you wish to be judged as well. If we have all have to answer God in the end, then so be it. But you are not God. And not everyone believes the way you believe. That is why there is a separation of church and state. So you may act according your beliefs and others may act according to theirs.
I'm pro-choice all the way, but partial birth abortion is just too close to murdering the child for me. I don't really see this as chipping away at women's rights as much as an effort to draw the line between abortion and murder. The only time I could see performing a partial birth abortion would be if the child were technically brain dead or severely damaged in some way but not because the mother simply didn't want the child anymore. I'd like to see the ban lifted and re-written to require one or more of those conditions in order to perform a partial birth abortion. A compromise should be reached rather than completely banning the rights of a group of people.
I believe in pro-life, I also believe that the people in this country have become so concerned with what they have the right to do that they are blinded by what the right thing to do is. I am glad it was banned and maybe people will think about the consequences more before they have sex. If they are mature enough to have sex they are mature enough to have a baby and vice versa.
I am pro-life, but when a mother's life is in danger, or there is no chance that this child will be viable, I believe that the choice should be between the doctor and patient/family. It is such a touchy subject. I am blessed that I have not been in such a position, and I feel for those who have been and who will be in the future. I don't know how I would feel if I had to carry a fetus/child to term KNOWING it would be brain dead or stillborn, etc at birth. My thoughts and prayers are wtih those who experience this. God be with you.
I think that since this is essentially a done deal, the most constructive thing we as women can do is to work together to find some solutions to this... I, for one, strongly feel that waiting 18-20 weeks for a routine first ultrasound is WAY too late, and also, that making pregnant women wait 8-12 weeks for their first OB appointment is just ridiculous. Earlier treatment and diagnosis would make many of the situations we are now debating moot. What do you say? I say we all write to the ACOG and to our insurance carriers and demand earlier and better diagnostic and preventive care for pregnant women. Technology is MUCH improved and costs have come down for standard procedures. Even a simple ultrasound can point to many serious problems much earlier than 18 weeks. (The person I mentioned in my first post had anancephaly diagnosis confirmed at 11 weeks. It is possible.) I think a better, earlier standard of care would alleviate much of this problem.
I've read quite a bit of comments here. It is overwhelming that those with the opinion of 'maybe women will think twice before having sex' , and 'it's Gods gift" DO NOT understand when exactly this procedure is neccessary!....It is NEVER used for an regular abortion!!! Seriously- all of you women of God?,,
Will you PLEASE read the article
http://lifestyle.msn.com/mindbodyandsoul/womenintheworld/articlemc.aspx?cp-documentid=4595719
posted by AC2000? What that poor woman went through I WISH on all of you whom rush into judgement.
While not in favor of partial birth abortions, per se, I do feel that this ruling is, as Ruth said, chipping away at the right to abortion that has been established time and time again. This is just a slippery slope towards sending us back to the dark ages where women went to butchers to have the procedure done in back alleys in less-than-ideal environments, many of them losing their lives. Sure, we hope that no one ever *needs* an abortion, but things happen and it's not always right or fair to expect a woman, just because something happened out of her control, to carry to term and give birth in those circumstances. I think the court should simply say a woman has a right to an abortion and then leave off the specifics of the hows and whys. No, it shouldn't be used simply as birth control, but neither should it be denied just because the pregnancy has gone beyond some magic window, particularly when due dates are still, even with today's technology, *estimated*.
I am also pro-choice. Abortion should not be used as a form of birth control, that's for sure, but not every woman has access to birth control pills/condoms, or maybe they don't always prevent pregnancy. Regardless, the right to terminate a pregnancy should ALWAYS lie with the woman who has to go thru being pregnant for 9 months, but women need to take the responsibility of being proactive and getting it done sooner rather than later. Being pregnant forever changes your body, not to mention dealing with an unwanted child. If men were the ones getting pregnant and having the children, our nation, and even the entire world, would not be having this debate. Interestingly, on that topic, I found that my medical insurance will cover 80% co-pay for Viagra, but only 30% for birth control pills. No wonder women have to continue to fight for our rights... we need more women in office who understand that it's an individual woman's choice! I think men would like to see us home having babies, without the vote again!
I agree with almost everyone here... the thing that worries me most is ...is this the start to chip away a womans freedom due to beliefs of others(not caring of others and what issues may be going on with them) it seems others are so easy to say what should happen to so many woman as if this would even be a easy choice ...there are so many many child that are in foster homes never adopted out I would think the energy that they put into abortion could be also put there as well I bet out foster care wouldnt exist.... what about the ones that are already here? not in another country but here ...ask your self out of all the people that are for this how many have went to help the ones here ...i am sure the number is very low(except certain ones) ... the start of the government really truly entering our lives...where is this different from most third world countries... are we headed that way only to be told this for the good of the world....we do still live in the united states if america right?
*meant United States of America?
My mom was pregnant in 1982 with a baby the doctors, after several ultrasounds, said was "Severely deformed" and would suffer his entire life from "severe mental and physical retardation...if he lives at all." "He will be a vegetable at best." They told her she should have an abortion. My mother suffered deep distress because of what the doctors told her. She worried about her baby, but she told them she would never consider it. She believes in the sanctity of life, and a developing baby IS a person...a valuable life, from the moment of conception.
Well, my mom toughed it out the whole pregnancy, thinking her baby would be a mere vegetabe, if he lived at all. That's what the doctors said would happen. That's what the pictures showed. My mom prayed for her baby throughout her pregnancy.
In August 1983, my little brother was born, full-term, and....PERFECT. He's married, going to vet school, and is a good influence on all who know him. All because my mom revered the life within her.
PRO CHOICE. keep their laws off our bodies. we don't mandate their castration after rape, right?
No, mom of two, we don't castrate men after rape but we SHOULD!!
Oh, and to my knowledge castration is NOT murder or taking of life.
Partial abortion is only used with severe medical conditions. Laws already prohibit simple free will abortion that late in the pregnancy.
Message to YP: I have a hard time believing your story. Hopefully you aren't making up fantasies to falsely persuade others.
I agree with that first quote
"I do not wish for abortion to become illegal but I can't say I was upset to hear this procedure will no longer be preformed."
While I am pro-choice, not only do I think that partial-birth abortion is morally wrong, but dangers. Still I know, in most cases a woman would not wait that long to have an abortion unless there were life-threatening complications. Still, I have to fear for the reproductive and overall health of women who do have sex. While I realize that people (not just women) are turning into whores, Roe v Wade happened for a good reason--to protect women who really need it.
In this abortion the baby is in the birthing canal. Advocates for the abortion argue that it is used to save the motherâs life, if the baby is already in the birthing canal then it is not much farther for the baby to be born!
If I understand Christianity, we are given free will. The decision to have or not to have an abortion is between God and I. How dare the government and the church interfere in my free will. Murder? Well, again, that's between God and I on judgement day. The government interefering in this is making a religious decision even if they are saying that religion and government are not to mix. I had to make that choice when I was barely 18. I took responsibility and I was glad at the time that the welfare department and planned parenthood were there to help me right my mistake. The decision and consequences are always on my mind, but it was my choice and I would not have become the outstanding citizen I am now. I would not have been able to serve my country as a soldier and I would not have been able to get a college degree. I probably would've been ruined for life and like so many of my other classmates, be a dependent of the welfare system.
As a woman, I reserve the right to make my own choice. My free will
abortion is murder.
Since when does abortion affect women only? Three peoples lives are affected in abortion: the mother, the child, and the father. I think what's really outrageously unequal is how men are treated by the abortion industry - they are helpless to defend their children.
Message to Ashley: Whether or not you believe my post is neither here nor there. I wouldn't take the time to post lies. I know there are many who don't believe in miracles. My story is true. I hesitated to post it,because I knew I might get a response like yours... but I posted anyway, hoping my mom's experience might speak to someone out there who is looking for hope. Miracles do happen, and they happen all the time.
For those who say pro-life groups try to counsel a woman through her grief after an abortion are full of BS. I know someone who turned to one of those groups and all they did was call her a murderer and tell her that she has committed a sin god will never forgive her for.
Abortion is a tough enough choice without the government getting into it. This is just the beginning of a stripping of women's abortion rights, before long the entire procedure will be banned. I would rather save my baby pain and suffering from a severe abnormality than take a risk of them being born like that.
Rape and incest are for "worse" reasons to terminate a pregnancy. I can understand a woman chosing to do so but how can you support a woman terminating a pregnancy for something like that and yet if a baby will be so severely abnormal you can't?? Rape and incest are cases for adoption.
Keep the d*mn government out of our bodies and doctor's offices.
Thank you for the article by the way.
I am very concerned about the road we are starting down with this ruling. Abortion is something best left between a patient and her doctor. The Supreme Court is telling all U.S. citizens (and the world, by the way) with this ruling that women should not be allowed to make their own reproductive choices -- that those decisions are better left to the government to regulate. I worry very much for the future that my daughters and grandaughters will face.
God does forgive for every sin, however, the person who has this abortion has to live everyday with what they have done. Who could possibly take a living baby and murder it. Let it be born and allow it to be adopted by someone who would love to have a child.
I am thankful for the ban and I pray for all the tiny babies murdered by the people that were supposed to protect them. May God have mercy on those that were too interested in their own lives to protect their own children. I am a woman. I have successfully carried two children that might have killed me. They are both healthy, happy and beautiful today and I am healthy as well. And I don't care about the woman's body. You chose to climb into bed. If you were worried about imperfect children or having your life threatened by pregnancy you should have taken precautions. Its about these children that are being murdered by their own parents becuase they are imperfect or an inconvenience. Abortion is wrong. A fancy, inoffensive term for murder. I felt my babies moving at 7 weeks gestation. They were alive and aware. They feel pain. Just because they can't scream doesn't mean they can't feel. Maybe we should try it on a few of these "doctors" and "mothers" and let them decide if its an agonizing murder or a "procedure."
this has nothing to do with "womens rights" this is about the child that is being murdered...stop thinking of yourself and think about that child that you are killing
Always and forever, I will believe that abortion is a personal decision that should take place between a mother, her family and their doctor. I will never accept the government's desire to regulate my body. Anyone who believes otherwise, and I don't say this lightly, is living in the Dark Ages.
I am 11 weeks pregnant and after seeing our precious miracle MOVING around with heart obviously beating I don't know how anyone can terminate the life of their baby! Especially late term!?!?!
We speak of women's rights---but what about baby's right?
And as far as those that have things such as anacephaly and such--I know of two women who carried until full term in spite of the pain of the loss afterwards. These are mothers. Mothers who gave their baby's every last chance they could possibly give them, in spite of their own pain! Isn't the true heart of a mother to do whatever it takes for your child no matter the sacrifice to you?
I heard it said once, "Notice that the only people opposing abortion are those that have been already been born." What truth!
"And I don't care about the woman's body. You chose to climb into bed. If you were worried about imperfect children or having your life threatened by pregnancy you should have taken precautions." Okay, that was just nasty. There is NO way to prevent your baby from being diformed. There is no way to know that pregnancy will threaten your life. You won't know that until you are pregnant. To say that a woman who wanted to have a baby that chose to end her pregnancy because either her life is threatened or the baby will die should have prevented it, is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Where did you come up with that? My best friend of 20 yrs almost ended a pregnancy due to severe diformities of a baby that she and her husband wanted. She was told the baby would not live outside of her. It was the hardest decision they ever had to make. By the time they decided to end the pregnancy, nature took its course & ended it for her. It was so hard on her. I know, I listened to her cry for her baby girl.
BOTTOM LINE - ABORTION IS MURDER AT ANY STAGE OF PREGNANCY. PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION IS MOST HEINOUS. If 'partial birth' abortions are only for medical reasons, then why was it ever taken to court? People who are against abortion need to keep their nose out of other's lives. I have yet to see one pro-lifer who convinced a woman to not have an abortion come forward and finacially help her take care of her baby. Why not? If they are so for the baby's life why not help make it better by giving the mother money so they don't (not all, just the ones who live in or are boarding poverty) have to live a life of poverty? Don't hand me that bologna of she should have used BC. BC does fail. You can take every precaution and still get pregnant. A gal I know got pregnant years after a vasectomy. Pro-lifers should pony up and help women with babies who can't afford them or adopt the ones in foster care. Like that will ever happen. Leave those women alone. By the way I have 3 kids, all wanted. I don't believe in forcing my beliefs on others, because I was raised to mind my own business.
So, are you saying money is more important than a life? It's ok to kill a baby so the mother won't have to be POOR? Are you kidding? That is the sickest thing I've heard yet. That is no different than murdering a millionaire to steal his money. Both situations are murder for money. What's wrong with you people? Should we have "minded our own business" when Scott Petersen murdered his wife and baby? The human fetus is a human being with emotions and a personality. They can feel pain. This is no different than murdering an adult. We should not and cannot look the other way or "mind our own business".
First off ladies, are we animals?
Do we have intercourse w/o thought?
If a intelligent woman knows she is not capable or willing to have a child then why not get an IUD? Or, the Depo injection? or any one the the numerous forms of birth control that exist today to help curb this issue til a woman is ready.
We don't stop to think long enough or often enough to realize that there is no such thing as casual sex, or entirely safe sex either. If you are going to be sexually active, then you are going to have to accept the outcome.
That being said for those of us who have had our freedom of choice taken from us ( i.e. rape/ incest victims).
Are not we also intelligent women?
Cannot we not also make the decision of whether not to keep, place for adoption, or terminate a unwanted pregnancy?
For the cases where a fetus is severely disabled it takes a committee of health professionals to review the facts with the mother and then decide to go forward with termination.
And even then there are people willing to adopt.
Everyone talks about abortion as being a "woman's choice" but what about the baby's choice? "I knit you inside your mother's womb." Anyone who calls themself a Christian should be able to see that life starts at conception. These babies have no choice in the matter as to whether they live or die. At 22 weeks a baby can survive outside his mother's womb. Why not perform a C-section instead of an abortion? A C-section has way less complications than an abortion has. And, you give a baby a chance to live instead of letting it come half way into the world and then killing it. Mothers who give birth don't begin to think of their baby as a human being once it's head is out of her uterus, and neither should the medical community. If doctor's aren't willing to protect the un-born, someone should step up to do it. Why is the mother's life any more important than the baby's?
I am very happy with the desicion. i am Pro-Life and I have seen what partial birth abortions can do to families. the babies are not born dead, the doctors kill them and that is just worng. the way they do it would make anyones stomach turn. Being a woman myself, i think abortion should only be used in a rape case. abortion of any type has a great emoitional toll on the woman and the familiy
Let's get real here. People who are against abortion/pro-life are NOT against womens rights. We are against killing defenseless babies. Quit acting like the courts, government, or pro-lifers are out to "get you and your little rights too." Funny how your battle cry rings out when someone clubs a baby seal, nevermind the baby humans. Talk about a sick world.
I think partial birth abortion is murder in the first degree, what is this country coming to.Children and babies have less rights and cannot defend themselves,so the courts will try sometimes. For the people who are pro partial birth abortion:Do you think Scott Peterson should have not been tried for the murder of his unborn son? Go figure, this is MURDER IN THE WORST DEGREE! People, have some mercy!
Women have their rights to choose for their OWN bodies. It is their decision. We had to fight for those rights about 40 years ago and why do we want to let the freedom take away from us? People knows when they have sex, they know there is a chance of getting pregnant but we cannot blame and punish every women for a few women bad decisions. There are people out there who needs to get abortion for medical purposes. If we take that right away, there will be alot more crime and dangers from women getting abortions from the illegal dark back alleys doctors.
DON'T TRY TO TURN THE YEARS BACK! All the civil rights and feminist movements happen for the right reasons.
When a pregnant woman is murdered the murderer is charged with 2 counts of murder because the woman is carrying another life. I think that's pretty fair, don't you? So if we are willing to count a fetus as a whole other life during a murder trial, why the heck is it not considered when it comes to abortion?
You people need to make up your minds!
I believe a woman can choose to have an abortion in cases of 1)incest, 2)rape or 3) possibly if it will kill the mother to have the baby (she gets cancer and can't get treatment during a pregnancy or whatever. Even then, this last one is a big 'IF').
Why is it up to any mother to say that her child shouldn't get a chance in this world? If they don't want to raise a disabled child then fine but it's just plain wrong to decide that the child doesn't deserve to live (even if it doesn't live very long). I hear arguements from some of you stating that it's okay because the baby can't feel a thing. I would like to know how you know this.
Continued...
How on earth does anyone know if a baby can or cannot feel pain when it is being aborted through the partial birth abortion metiod? Medical professionals don't even know if adults in comas can feel pain.
By the way, people need to be teaching their kids about safe sex, regardless if they want their kids having sex or not. People think being pregnant is so bad and would do anything to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy but last I checked you can't abort STD's. Yeah, I would much rather have my daughter get pregnant then get HIV, Clomidia, Genital Warts, Genital Herpies or any other STD that doesn't go away and can ruin their sexual heath (or kill them).
Look, just because they took partial birth abortion away from you pro-choicers I don't think you will loose your right to go abort any non-viable pregnancy. Stop freaking out and use 2 kinds of contraceptives next time.
Seriously, it's so funny that all of your pro-choice fanatics scream about your rights. Last I checked, ending another human life isn't within your rights.
"The government is controlling me blah, blah, blah!" SHUT-UP! Just because you want to do something (like murder somebody) doesn't mean it should be legal.
But whatever, if you 'pro-partial birth abortion' fans can sleep at night...
Every person is born with a conscience, a natural mechanism that tells them if something is good or bad, right or wrong. If you ignore the whisperings of conscience over and over again, you will no longer be able to hear them.
Anyone who honestly listens to their own conscience knows the truth about abortion. Trouble is, society has taught us that conscience is not important and that "right" and "wrong" do not exist. We have become a self-centered, self-serving, amoral society who are so callous that we accept the mass murder of innocent babies all around us, every day. Tune out all the noise, all the self-centered rhetoric, and listen to your conscience. Unless you have desensitized yourself so much that you can no longer hear what your own soul is telling you, you will know the answer. There is only one answer that satisfies conscience: reverence for life. An unborn baby is alive just as much as you are alive. The decision to have an abortion will haunt your conscience for the rest of your life.
I believe in the old sayin you do the crime you do the time.... If you have sex and you get pregnant then you need to take responsability and take care of the baby 99.9% of women that get abortions are just gettin them cause they cant handle being a parent if you dont want the baby there are Thousands maybe Millions of people that would love a baby give it up for adoption... I agree with the decision.... It ALL should be banned abortion as a whole....
it sickens me to think anyone could stand for such a thing that baby is full term and the way they do it in my eyes is murder in my opinion if you dont wont kids use protection 'they offer it you know'in fact theres all kinds.I am almost 30 years old I have a daughter that means the world to me an abortion would never cross my mind and if I ever had to choose between my life or the childs my child would be my choice to let have a chance at life I had mine.they made the right decision Im glad theese unborn babies are being protected by the supreme court.and for those who say its a womens right why should the babies not have THE RIGHT to live.
I applaud the author of this blog for acknowledging that this procedure is only "popularly called" a "partial-birth abortion." It seems like so many times the media forgets that this is not a medical term and just calls the procedure a partial-birth abortion without caveat. In fact the term was coined by someone in a right-wing anti-choice group, as a way to horrify people. It's a great example of demagoguery.
I encourage all journalists to consider calling it what it is: Intact dilation and extraction. Let's not cloud the discussion with terms designed to appeal to people's emotions.
To all pro-choice people that believe you have lost some of your women rights, have you ever considered that some aborted babies were girls? Also,do you believe in the death penalty for men,but not women? Partial birth, oops should have said:Partial death abortion has nothing to do with women rights! If your married to a man, with children and he divorces you for another woman, are you going to hand over full custody to him freely or let the court decide? You see the point, don't ride the fence with this issue.Partial birth abortion is murder, those poor helpless babies! But they will see God's face, even though they were thrown out like a piece of trash!
I am a proud father of two wonderful little girls. If my girls were sick and my life could save them then they will live . These unborn babies should have a chance at life as well.Life starts at conception not after birth. I think that if you get pregnant and wasn't wanting a child; there are 1,000's of people who would be excellant parents who would take the child. the child would be well took care of and given all the love that could be given to them. You dont have to give birth to a child to be a good parent. there are other options besides killing a unborn child.let the child be apart of our future.
The Supreme Court decision, is yet another example of the government, especially the current leadership trying to force they morals on the America public. This current adminstration has thrown the constitution away and are rewritting it to their beliefs. No one has to right to tell anyone else what they can and can't do with their body. Not only the government, the courts or the extremist terrorising women that are already scared. If all of these groups would spend half the energy on prevention measures instead of the aftermaths maybe the numbers of abortation would drop. Give women more choices, easier access, less judgement before hand. Then stay out of it. It is no one elses businesses, especially males, it's not their bodies.
Three points: as an atheist, I personally do not believe that "God " enters into this one way or another. This decision is between a woman and her doctor, period.
Second, I cannot believe that anyone would wait this long and then decide, willy-nilly, that she wants an abortion. (Possily I am being naive here.) There is almost always a reason involving the health of the mother or the unborn child.
Third, it is my understanding that the the Supremes did not outlaw late term abortions, only this method. There are other ways to kill the fetus. Grisly though "partial birth" is, it may be, in its sudden death aspect, more humane and painless than the other methods. (I am speculating here, as I am not sure what other methods would need to be employed in this tragic circumstance.) I think it is more the IDEA of what is done to the fetus, rather than the quick and painless death that would result, that has so many people up in arms.
This ban does not include if the mother's health is at risk.
In this country a child has been delivered and lived at 22 weeks.
I can not imagine knowing this that anyone with a good heart can support a late term abortion.
Why can't a woman decide before then? Is 20+ weeks not enough time?
If at the last minute they decide not to keep the baby and they are so close to the end of their pregnancy, adoption should be the choice. Allow others who so desperately want a child to love the child that a mother doesn't want.
If this offends you sorry just like your rights to express your fellings ive got mine.abortion is a sad sad thing. give the child a chance to have a life you had yours.and as for the lady who stated the men need to stay out of it, dont they have a right to express their feelings as well. as far as I know all children have a dad.I think when someone dies it should be gods choice not a mother or Dr.so theres my opinion agree or not I said it.
Unfortunately, I had a partial birth abortion. I was 22 weeks pregnant. The child had a hole in its heart,a hydrocyphalic head (water on the brain) and had down syndrome. I had a 2 year old daughter and wanted this child badly. My only option was to wait it out, and give birth to a child that would never survive or a partial birth abortion. I would have to put my daughter through seeing her mother pregnant and then try to explain what a still born was. Are you kidding me? I also could die during delivery.
I love the people who speak without ever experiencing the pain and agony of that decision. Until you walk in my shoes. mind your own business. THis is a personal choice. I am not saying I agree with abortion as birth control, but seriously, think about it. What would you have done? It truly bothers me when politics can dictate this. Can they take away my pain every Oct. 21st. NO. Sorry, this is a very sore topic for me.
To Agent:
Thanks for that link. That is exactly what happened to me. I had to go to some clinic and experience the worst experience of my life.
This was not a choice, like tea or coffee. It is humiliating and degrading. I felt terrible sadness and still do.
My doctor wouldn't do it for me, so he sent me to a dirty clinic knowing full well I wanted this baby.
I am sorry if what I did offends people, but as I have said.
Don't judge until you have walked in my shoes.
Debbie
Abortion is killing a child. How can anyone willingly do that to their daughter or son? I don't understand it.
ABORTION is all evil! it like a first degree murder! your killing your child... I mean if you dont want a kid...dont have sex or use protection... i mean afterward the mothers feel all guilty because they killed a live soul! it wrong and it should be legal! i mean if a person kills a person they go to jail, but when a mother kills a unborn INNOCENT baby she doesnt! it wrong! i dont know why some mothers do that..do they even have a heart? i dont wanna be rude but kids are happiness!
What floors me about this whole comments section is that most "pro lifers" seem to be more interested in imposing their own decisions/values on others - particularly when they have never walked in their shoes. I am pro life - the mother's life also. When there is NO CHANCE FOR VIABILITY/LIFE - why is this an issue? This is a cause for concern MAINLY because prenatal care in this country is so grossly poor compared to other "developed" countries.
I agree with the person who correctly posted that the real, appropriate, term for this procedure is called intact dilation and extraction. What that means is that the child is delivered whole. Which means the parents would then get the chance to hold/cuddle their child, and then have an intact baby for burial (which many do).
What many people who "applaud" this ban don't realize is that this leaves the mother - who for MEDICAL REASONS - feels the need to do end her pregnancy only has ONE ALTERNATIVE - to have her child cut up into pieces in utero. Terrible.
Against abortion? Don't have one.
For the "concerned father" out there - until its your body, your opinion is secondary.
A FORCED pregnancy is TORTURE. You can gift wrap it any way you want. But no one should be made to a carry pregnancy to term.
As an adopted child - every child should be wanted. And for all the people out there who mentioned adoption - well, people want perfect little babies. They don't want children with defects or older kids whose parents didn't give them up as babies, but instead did the "right thing" and kept them and then gave them to Social Services after they were abused and broken.
There are THOUSANDS of UNWANTED kids in foster homes and do not doubt that they know they're not wanted.
I challenge all the pro-lifers to go adopt an older child with serious problems, and then tell me how you feel.
I speak from experience - my horribly abused adopted younger sister and my whole family would be much better off if her drug-addicted/alchoholic mother had decided to end her pregnancy.
Yes,there are many unwanted children in this world, but we do not live in a perfect world. Adoption doesn't always work out for the best, sometimes it might be better if the young Mother or Dad keep their own baby.I also believe that doctors don't always know what will happen, good or bad.You can loose a child by death at any age or they can become disabled physically or mentally, but do you decide if they should still live. Most often if something is wrong with a baby, you will have an miscarriage or you could have a good pregnancy, but loose the baby due to deformities. Don't assume that people who are pro-life have never been in your shoes either way. I do not believe in abortions, but we as a country need to clean up all our problems such as drugs, alcohol, divorce, parents that don't care etc. For someone pregnant reading these posts that feels fear of not knowing what to do,there is help out there, and follow your heart. All things can be possible if you give it a chance. Thank you
See we all don't feel the same way. So thats why we should have the right to choose what we would like to do with our bodys. We are over in Iraq to give the people rights, but we are so quick to take away owers. Thats very sad!!! You don't have to have an Abortion. That's your right, and aren't you glad? Unless you have ever been faced with that dission then be quit.
Jenny, I totally agree. To me, "pro life" is a decision I would make myself - but that does NOT mean I support political agenda-machines imposing personal morals onto others.
I just saw the below article on CNN, and thought it was appropriate. If to continue medical treatment is deemed to be futile - and the child's condition will never improve, (whether the child is born or unborn), what is the correct decision to make? Continue to treat the child indefinitely/carry to term (I recall the story of a family who recently had their daughter surgically altered so she would stay a "small" and "managable" size, so they could continue to care for her), or allow the child to die/terminate (either course results in the child's death).
Who is to say what the "right" course of action is? I cannot decide that for anyone but myself - but the political "pro life" agenda seems to be determined to make those decisions for us all.

People keep talking about how this is chipping away at a women's right to an abortion. What about the BABY's rights or the FATHER's rights? They are just as entitled to a say in the matter. However, since the baby cannot speak, it gets now vote?
MOST cases of abortion are not a case of life or death. They are the woman using it as "birth control" which is totally wrong. Either stop having sex, or start being responsible and give your baby to someone who wants and can't have... or get a better birth control method.
