Bits and Pieces

A fresh sampling of hot conversations happening all over iVillage this week:

-- "Boyfriends" in elementary school? Cute or asking for trouble? mom2cassandsteff writes: "I am personally against the idea of encouraging (or even not discouraging) 'boyfriends' for young children. I guess some people think this is cute and think, 'Where's the harm to play along?'" [on the Parenting Issues Debate message board]

-- Need some motivation and support to get ready for that summer bikini? Join The Get Beach Ready Community Challenge! The challenge kicks off on Monday and Sophie offers this tip to prep for what's to come: "Take the weekend to clear out your kitchens! Toss all the irresistible snacks which are likely to derail you and stock up on healthier options. Be prepared!" [on the Get Beach Ready Community Challenge forum]

-- Should cigarettes be banned? With all of the health issues caused by smoking, is it time to ban the butt once and for all? [on the Kick Butt: Quit Smoking Today message board]

-- If you're a mom, you may recognize yourself in this quote: "I'm due on July 10, 2007 and I am freaking out. This is my first child and I have no clue what I am doing. I'm worried about my weight gain and going into early labor." Share your on-the-job training and connect with women just like you on our social networking platform, iVillage Connect. [on iVillager ashleighhiggins' Connect blog]

-- You either love her or hate her ... Rosie O'Donnell is always a hot topic. Now that she's leaving The View are you cheering or will you miss your daily dose of O'Donnell? [on the TV Talk Shows message board]

-- Finally, atlgrrl sums up what most of us are thinking as warm weather kicks into gear: "So it's already sandal weather here. My pet peeve is women and men who wear sandals but didn't bother to get a pedicure or even wash their feet. With casual Fridays, I see tons of people in our building wearing shoes that show me icky feet that should only see the light of day in the privacy of their own homes. Come on people!! Pumice stones and soap!!! " [on the Fashion Pet Peeves message board]

Not sorry to see Rosie go, really. Lately she just seems to make hateful comments to cause a stir, rather than voicing her opinions in a respectful way.

Elementary "boyfriends" & "girlfriends" are harmless. At that young age, they are just learning about social involvement. They don't have a clue what it really means to have a S.O.

I'm so glad that Rosie is leaving The View. I use to watch it but she would interrupt the other women, and the guests, that I couldn't take it any longer. Not to mention that being a "shock jock" on tv during the day is not welcome to most of us.

Icky feet? Geez, find something thats important to worry about.

"Pumice stones and soap" Atlgrrl is my kind of woman! Makes me want to hand those people a tub of Lamisilk Overnight Foot Cream and a Dr. Scholl's Exfoliating Stone File and send them on their merry way!

Ooh, I totally agree with atlgrrl. I knew that sandal season was coming up and I was prepping ahead of time. Adding extra lotion to my feet and getting my toenails spiffied up and polished.

Rosie -- I rarely watched The View until she joined. As strident as she could be, she was fun to watch.

Rosie's always fun to watch, but I wasn't expecting her to be happy on the View long - she likes to be in charge. I'm betting she'll have something of her own again soon.

Oooh, I agree with atlgrrl - icky feet do not belong in sandals... BLECK!

I agree on the icky feet lol! We make sure our faces and hands and wardrobe are nice, I don't understand neglecting the feet (even in winter! do we really want to scare the small children and indoor pets with gross feet?)

I almost don't know where to start.

I wish I had time to have my pet peeve be someone else's unpedicured feet. How dare those people not have matching polish! What are they thinking even leaving the house that way? And to think I was worrying about having enough money to pay my rent, I should be worrying about my feet not offending others.

So long Rosie, I hope the door hit ya on the way out. I'm sure it won't be long before I hear you somewhere else because you are desperate for any platform to be everyone's conscience and badmouth anyone who breathes funny. Maybe someday you'll practice what you preach and be a better moral guidepost for your children.

Pairing off in grade school is dangerous, if not supervised. Check out stats on teen pregnancy, ages might be surprising. Scary stuff, and it has to start somewhere. They have lots of years to be adults, encourage them to be kids while they can.

I'm opposed to grade school "boyfriends and girlfriends". Call me an old fuddy-duddy, I don't care. I don't think it's "adorable".

I'm sorry that Rosie is leaving The View, although I never thought that show was a great fit for her. I'd like to see Barbara Walters leave! She tries too hard to be too politically correct and is just as guilty of jumping in and interrupting people as any of them.

And about all the comments about the yucky feet pet peeve...it was posted on the FASHION PET PEEVES board! What do you think they should post about there...global warming, the war in Iraq? Sheesh, lighten up people! Maybe you all just have yucky feet yourselves??

I like Rosie!!! I never watched the view until she was on it. And I guess I'll stop watching it once she leaves.

I like Rosie too. Sometimes she goes too far, of course, but that makes her interesting. She seems real to me, unlike so many celebrities who carefully calculate everything that comes out of their mouths.

Seems like guys, in general, get away with being a lot more opinionated than women can.

Yucky feet are just gross... how can people NOT do something to make their feet look better when they are going to don open toed shoes? Seriously EW

My only comment about the bfs/gfs in elem. is what do they think a bf/gf is? When my K-grader came home saying she had a bf, that's the 1st thing I asked her, and it turns out her idea of a bf is someone who's cute, smart, funny, nice, and polite. When I asked her what bfs and gfs do, she said, "We talk and we play on the playground like all friends do, Mommy" and rolled her eyes at me like "Duh!" LOL. So, I think if it's just that they're friends and call it bf/gf, it's fine, but if they think it's more than that, and they're kissing or something, then we need to talk. ;)
