Tyra's Flanks
There’s been a lot of buzz lately on the whole Tyra Banks thing. You know, like how she’s totally horribly fat now (read= not model proportions, maybe, but still skinnier than most people you’ll encounter on planet earth). After tabloids printed unflattering photographs of her with increasingly bizarre, insulting headlines (Ok, America’s Next Top Waddle was at least kind of funny – but Tyra Porkchop? I’m still scratching my head over that one), Banks lashed back.
And now our boards are responding.
“I am on the fence on this one. For starters, yes 161 lbs at 5.10 is a healthy weight, but I am not so sure I feel sorry for her. I mean this is a woman who has made millions of dollars by perpetuating an ideal that is not realistic for most women. I have seen her on America's Next Top Model telling women they need to be a certain body type etc in order to succeed in the industry…On the other hand, she has also said that now that she is not a model she can eat like a normal person, which goes to show that these tiny models are not living life as the average women, that they are going outside the norm to create their bodies.”
“I don't feel sorry for Tyra ... America's Next Top Model is one of my indulgences, and I think Tyra is quite hypocritical (not to mention she's gotten meaner to the girls every season and has become this drag-queen-looking diva), because she always acts like she's 'pro' plus-size models and will have about one girl per season on there who's 'plus-size' (read: normal), but that girl is always kicked off because she's 'just too heavy to do runway' or something like that…Any woman (even the ones who are thinnest naturally) once she gets into her mid-20s, will simply not be able to stay that thin without starving herself (since women are MEANT to have a decent amount of body fat). That's why models' careers are generally so short-lived.”
"She's definitely not FAT. Even in the unflattering pictures of her she doesn't appear FAT to me. I wish to be that fat." I hear that.
What do you think?

I do understand that she is harsh on America's Next Top Model. She is. But, how can you not feel sorry for her? It is horrible for anyone to be called fat, it is a million times worse for every tablod around posting pictures of you and saying things like Pork Chop. Yeah, she has gained weight, but we should be applauding her for looking normal, not criticizing her. If you don't feel bad for her, you have no heart. Just imagine yourself in her place, she must be devestated.
Although I do not think she's fat (but not skinny either), I don't exactly feel sorry for her. To me, she seems hypocritical. She's tells everyone that it's okay to be plus-size but yet gets all defensive when others call her fat and tells contestants on ANTM to abide by a certain body standard. And being in the modeling industry for so long, she should know that others will judge her by appearance, that shouldn't be a surprise.
I agree she's hypocritical to appear on TV in a bathing suit and vehemently deny she's fat, as if it's the most horrible thing she's ever been called, and then in another instance tell people to be happy in their skin, whatever size that may be. As a BBW, I say SHE can kiss MY ass because she's still thin by my standards, lol.
I am not a fan at all of this woman. I found it very degrading, as a big girl, when she put on that fat suit and went out to "play". Seriously... did she really think SHE could make a difference when she put it on? To prove a point? What point? That life as a fat girl isn't easy? DUH! Why didn't she just hire a big girl to do... it would have been real then. And as a fat girl.. and I don't mean model fat, I mean fat... Not EVERY fat girl has a life like that she protrayed with the suit. Its not about how you look, its about how you protray yourself with your looks. Love your self, and others will love you.
So I guess I'm happy shes getting the flack now for the swimming suit fiasco, She wanted to be fat to prove a point... so prove it and embrace it... don't counteract it with getting back on the treadmill and running yourself skinny again, just so the tabloids will leave you alone. Tell them to bite you!
I think she's trying to have her cake and eat it, too. If she makes her living judging other women's bodies on TV, then she can hardly complain when people do the same to her. As long as she's continuing to cash in on an industry that perpetuates unrealistic (and unhealthy) body weights, then she can't whine when people apply those very standards to her. Make up your mind, Tyra!
Ok, first...ANTM is HIT show, I wonder why that is. I wonder if the audience watching this show is all skinny people. Tyra makes her money from US..the public! So let's not point fingers at her for building a media empire, mirroring that of Oprah's, when we totally buy into it.
Secondly, Tyra has been discriminated against in the modeling world for being "too curvaceous." Yes, she's skinnier than most people, but in her field, she's not..and she broke the mold and still made loads of money, I would think women would be happy about that!! Real women do have curves, she has and she worked it...good for her!
Lastly, and I'm not overweight so I know I'll get slack for saying this. Obviously, we all know the side effects of poor eating habits and unhealthy body weight. Those who are overweight should be treated fairly, but celebrating being unhealthy in every other part of society doesn't happen. Do you see chain smokers being praised for "keeping it real?" No, so lets just tell it like it is ladies.
I love TyTy and think shes a great roll model and of course she will get defensive when people call her fat cause shes not,she has to tell the contestants on her show they need to be a certain body type just like being tall that is a requirement of the biz they are trying to make it in and it does not make her a hypocrate shes retired and shes only telling them the truth so that they know what they are getting in to she can now eat what she wants and focus on the new career shes earned it !!!!
We all have issues and Tyra is no different. But despite her issues I think there are some positive things that she is trying to do with young women.
I believe that coming out of the world of "Super Models" and being able to eat normally again might have revealed some things to Tyra about herself and some of the things she needs to work on in terms of health. I don't think any of this is really about actual size, I really believe Tyra deals with her own insecurity issues and it's coming out. She has admitted that she likes to eat and it's not the best diet in the world. Tyra is beautiful in my eyes, but I don't think this is about her beauty I think that Tyra is trying to find a way to deal with some of the bad habits she actually has when it comes to diet. The important thing is to be healthy, if you are healthy you will be beautiful no matter what size you are.
The only reason people critize others (celebrity or not) is because either...
1. They are unhappy with themselves.
2. They have nothing better to do.
Most of the models are skinny sticks and to make it in that business you need to be like that. It's sad really. Granted there are "curvy" (I don't like the word...fat) models and hooray for them, BUT the majority of models are sticks.Tyra is just telling the girls like it is.
I totally disagree with yhose people who have negetive things to say to TYRA,i'm a fan and look up to her as a role model.she does the experimets herself so she can feel empathy for those people who are affected by obesity, since it is a BIG ISSUE IN AMERICA.
