Santa Clothes

Seriously, what is it about the holiday season that makes us all lose our freaking minds? Diets go out the window, as if there is some law of nature that if it has red-and-green sprinkles, the calories don’t count. Normally style-conscious women find themselves fingering Christmas sweaters and jingle-bell earrings, thinking, well, they are awfully festive… Is it the chill in the air? Do they pump something into the air at the mall? What is the deal?

On the Fashion Pet Peeves board, cl-ladyinpublic asks, “What holiday styles that come back year after year really get to you? My personal one is the sweaters / sweatshirts with the turkeys, pilgrims, Christmas trees or Rudolph on them. Why do people buy these?”

sweetviolets : “There is this really horrid Mrs. Santa full-length hostess apron 70's pinafore thing with a giant poinsettia appliqué that my MIL wears every year...and she keeps suggesting that I need an outfit "tradition". Over my dead body. I don't do cute. I will buy a Christmas tree sweater and leggings before I wear a pinafore.”

What are your holiday style pet peeves? Or: if you’re sitting there getting out your Mrs. Santa pinafore as we speak, why do you do it? Make your case, woman!

Christmas sweaters. You know, the kind with every imaginable embellishment appliquéd, tacked, sewn and otherwise hung on it? Gotta love 'em.

And while we're on the subject, can somebody PLEASE, for the love of all things good, tell this poor military wife exactly what "holiday casual" entails, because my DH doesn't have a clue. I have visions of myself showing up in black trousers & a shimmery cocktail blouse, only to be surrounded by -- you guessed it -- wives wearing those afore-mentioned Christmas sweaters.

ROFL at... "I will buy a Christmas tree sweater and leggings before I wear a pinafore" agreed! We have a decorated tree in the family room, I don't need to walk around looking like one too.

I like some of the cute holiday graphic tee-shirts they have at Old Navy, but I have to agree that a bedazzled applique sweatshirt featuring a giant Rudolph with a light-up nose is just over the top!

Oh, and my personal favorite? Musical clothing, where you press a button and the clothes actually play "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" or some such, in the form of tiny beeping. Now, that is just WRONG!

Ugh at the Christmas sweaters on adults and animals. I'd much rather show up at a holiday party with black slacks and a shimmery cocktail blouse than a Christmas sweater ANY day! Now, on kids - they're cute. But not on grown women!

And those handpainted "Grammie's Angels" sweatshirts. Ick, ick, ick.

But most of all my biggest holiday clothing pet peeve: the women who go shopping on Black Friday and ALL DRESS ALIKE. Yes, you heard me. I've seen it. Personalized Santa hats, gauche sweatshirts and jingle bell earrings. Yes. My cell phone needs a camera so I can prove it to you. The only thing those chicks did right? Hired a limo.

I hate the gaudy Christmas earrings my mother buys every single year. I never wear them, you'd think she'd stop buying them.

I have a friend that is hosting a tacky holliday party. Her name, not mine. And everyone, men included, are supposed to wear the tacky holliday sweaters- most likely salvation army or e-bay will get some business- Should be quite the site

what's wrong with dressing silly during the holidays? Must people are just having fun & feeling the holiday spirit. Tis the season to be non-critical.....

I agree with Cheryl....let people do what they do.....If they want to dress festive during this time, let them be!

OK, enough is enough
I used to agree with all of you at one time. I would never have donned any of the ridiculous holiday sweaters or sweatshirts. I'm a grandmother now and for the very first time in my life I bought a sweatshirt with a Christmas kitten on it and I don't even have the nerve to wear it outside! I won't be wearing on Christmas. Why did I buy this thing? I DON'T KNOW! I was hoping someone could tell me

I for one, love those Christmas clothes. I don't necessarily want to wear Rudolph, but I love all things handmade, and I love the seaon. You folks need to quit being so snobbish, please, and let everyone express themselves the way they see fit, there are far worse things, like a**cracks hanging out of pants, overblown, overenhanced breast spilling out of tops, and people who have not one inch of skin that's not tattoed with something. And how about those tee shirts with cuss words on them? Let's get things in perspective here, okay?
